Social work practicum educators are challenged to create and hold spaces for
witnessing, affirming, and supporting the integrative growth and learning of social work
students through the development of competencies. The goals of critical conversations
in practicum education include enhancing students’ understanding of professional
values and ethics, promoting self-awareness and reflexivity, cultivating cultural
humility, enhancing critical thinking, and the development of professional identity.
Participants will both discuss and experience strategies and skills for facilitating critical
conversations about anti-black racism, white privilege, white supremacy, and
institutional and structural racism with an explicit intentionality toward diversity and
social justice education.
