Conflict Resolution for Social Workers: Strategies & Processes

Social workers are rarely trained in conflict resolution approaches, though their work regularly involves navigating conflict-heavy scenarios and environments across practice areas and levels of practice (micro, mezzo, and macro). Additionally, social workers are increasingly navigating interdisciplinary contexts (Dominelli, 2004), and thus our work is likely to be affected by divergent professional perspectives, ethics, and dynamics. The ability to assertively, intentionally, collaboratively, and effectively address conflicts requires intrapersonal and interpersonal awareness, as well as a specific set of strategies and processes. This interactive two-hour workshop will provide social workers with a broad overview of conflict resolution processes and methods, with an emphasis on learning and practicing transferable skills for use in a variety of practice settings and roles. Negotiation, mediation, facilitation, and restorative approaches will be briefly introduced, with recommendations for further training and refinement of these approaches
