Transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming children and adults face intense stigma, marginalization and violence from every direction: from strangers, family members, service providers, and the highest levels of government. Yet, many of us manage to survive and thrive anyway. How? And how can social workers better support trans thriving?
Researchers are beginning to examine factors that contribute to trans thriving, while of course trans communities have been developing and sharing resilience practices forever. This session draws on both bodies of knowledge – the latest research on trans mental health and wellness, as well as the informally-shared accumulated wisdom of trans communities.
Participants will learn about the individual-, group-, and community-level factors that impact trans thriving, and the resilience practices at each of those levels that can support it. We’ll explore our particular roles as allies to/within trans communities, and develop individualized action plans to build on known resilience strategies to better support trans clients and trans communities.
